Game won't update on Windows

Client says “Failed to install update automatically”? Usually the antivirus gets in the way: it checks the new game file and won't let it be replaced. Go through these steps in order, usually the first or second one is enough.

  1. Start with this · half a minute

    Restart the game

    Close all Zenaria windows, including other character windows, and start the game again. The update usually goes through on the second try.

  2. Helps most often · a couple of minutes

    Add the game folder to antivirus exclusions

    Your antivirus will stop blocking game files, and updates will install on their own.

    Windows Defender

    Other antivirus

    Kaspersky, ESET, Avast, Dr.Web and others: open your antivirus settings, find the section Exclusions or Trusted zone and add the game folder there.

  3. If the game is in Program Files

    Move the game folder

    Windows doesn't let programs change files in Program Files, so the update won't install there. Move the game folder and run it from the new location.

  4. If nothing helped

    Install the full version

    Download the full game archive and extract it over the old folder. Nothing will be lost: characters are stored on the server, and settings are in config.ini.

Still not updating? Write in player chat or Discord and include the error text. This problem usually doesn't happen on Mac.
